COMMENTS FROM GRAA'S PRESIDENT, DR. PIEPER: At our February lunch,
three of GRAA's
'Ancient Athletes", Charlie Boyle, Tom Page and Peter Hui, all racewalk
Gold Medal winners in the Mary-
land Olympics, demonstrated their highly technical sport., showing us its
techniques and alleged benefits.
They said it is easy, but it looked sort of hard. It was a fun time and
our hats are off to anyone who can
walk a mile in seven (hey, even ten) minutes!
Next month we have a special treat, too. In April, l997, Goddard's former
Deputy Director, John Quann,
suffered a massive intracranial stroke, a catastrophic event from which
the usual odds of any recovery are
about ten percent. Today, John is in amazing, wonderful shape. His wife,
Eileen, also formerly at Goddard,
has written the remarkable story of his recovery. "By His Side: Life
and Love After Stroke". It is a moving,
inspiring story, made even more so because they are people we know. Eileen
and John will be with us on
March l2 with copies of her book and she will tell us about it, particularly
about dealing with aphasis, a com-
munication disorder that affects the ability to understand, speak, read
or write. To see John again and to hear
Eileen are things you won't want to miss.
