COMMENTS FROM GRAA'S PRESIDENT, DR. PIEPER: At our June GRAA lunch, Arnold Passman of Live Safe America program gave a vigorous talk about methods of personal defense if you should become a target for a purse snatcher or car jacker at an ATM machine or in a parking lot, elevator, or jogging path. His primary suggestion was to carry a good brand of pepper spray, especially by women. He had other suggestions (e.g., don't let anyone make you drive your car anywhere - drive into a low speed fender bender on purpose instead). Used Bob Morrissey as a potential mugger to show how to break attack holds. We were pleased that Bob behaved very well and did not hurt Mr. Passman, who in addition to being our guest, was half  Bob's size.

Next month on July 10, Bob Wigand has arranged for a visit by a group of junior/senior undergraduate students from around the country who are spending June 4 to August 8 at Goddard in the NASA Academy. They are a very talented group, as you can learn by going to the website: http://nasa-academy.gsfc.nasa.gov/.  Click on the GSFC Academy and go to the 2001 Academy to get pictures and profiles of this year's students. They are working as research assistants for PI's in codes 500, 600, and 900. These young people all have long term aspirations to work for NASA and look forward to having lunch with GRAA members to learn about what we did in the good old days. So enjoy lunch with them and spin them some yarns. Don't brag too much though; from their profiles some of them have already done remarkable things. So enjoy lunch with them and spin them some yarns.

And now we have a problem. Once again, a lot of people showed up for lunch in June who failed to call Alberta to get on the list. Forty people made reservations, Barney and Bea planned for fifty and sixty showed up. So Barney had to scramble to feed everybody and ran short of some things. PLEASE CALL AHEAD so Barney can plan. I remember when I worked at the Radiation Lab at MIT during World War II. If you forgot your badge, they let you in, but you had to wear a great big badge that said FORGOTTEN on it. Maybe we could do something like that, or make those who don't call ahead go to the end of the line. We'd rather have you call ahead.
