COMMENTS FROM GRAA'S PRESIDENT, DR. PIEPER: Due to Dr. Pieper's absence at the June Luncheon, his able Assistant Dick Baker submitted the following comments: Members and guests enjoyed a briefing by Dr. Joel Susskind on "Monitoring Climate Variability with Atmospheric Sounders." Among other responsibilities, Dr. Susskind is the Project Scientist for POES and a Senior Scientist for the Goddard Laboratory for Atmospheres. His presentation included many colorful vu-graphs showing long-term measurements of climate parameters by passive satellite instruments of POES and other projects, such as EOS. We had to cut off discussion to finish our meeting on schedule! Dr. Susskind answered questions one-on-one and in small groups long after the meeting ended. We appreciated his interest and preparation for the GRAA topic, and he enjoyed our responsive group. Who could ask for more?

TREASURER'S REPORT: Donations were received from Charlie Boyle, Henry Iuliano, Marie Marr, Bill Meyer, Ron Britner, Bill Elsen and Don Beattie.

MAIL STUFFERS FOR JUNE: George Abid, Rose McChesney, Roland & Anne Van Allen, Bob Wigand, Marge Gustafson, Agnes R. Smith. Mary and Bob Wilson, Eloise Tarter, Ewald Schmidt and Elaine Montgomery.

LETTERS WE GET LETTERS !!!
MEYER, WILLIAM H. of St. Augustine, Fl. - "Edie & I are full time in Paradise (better known as St. Augustine, Fl.) & see PB & Elaine every so often. Lucy B keeps us up-to-date on most things & the Newsletter fills in the gaps. Thanks for all the hard work & best regards to all"
RONALD O. BRITNER: of Bedford, PA - "Thanks for all the hard work -- hope the scientists looking at the Galaxy Evolution Explorer data realize that they are seeing data confirming that the galaxies were created - Cheers - "
HARRY O'DELL of Fountain Valley, CA - "Thanks for the Goddard News" -
DONALD A. BEATTIE of Jacksonville, Fl - "As a former HQ staffer, (you remember them, the ones you hated to take direction from). Many thanks for sending the Goddard News."
HENRY & KITTY IULIANO of Vienna, VA - "Enjoys receiving the 'Newsletter', my health is much better now and hopefully can attend functions again. Regards to everyone - keep up the good work.".
HAL HOFF of Myrtle Beach, SC - Following comments contained in note from Ches Looney re Hal's medical adventures - "After surviving surgery for aneurysm on Aorta, combined with gall bladder and adhesion removal, followed by strep infection, then extended care until mid April, then by another infection followed by severe diarrhea, the medical profession and I were not too happy. Noting a weight loss of 55 lbs, severe dehydration, a BP of 90 over 50 and significant anemia, I went to a second hospital and was treated to dextrose and saline solutions and a whole blood transfusion. Two MRIs, a Colonoscopy and some X-Rays lead me to a GI Surgeon who felt he could relieve a bowel obstruction with a bowel resection so off to the OR and by May l5 I was ready for Rehab! Two weeks in another hospital and I had recovered from that surgery and gained 25 lb of a 55 lb loss, got my appetite back, went through 4 to 5 hours each day of specialized physical therapy and was also graduated from wheelchair to walker to cane. I'm now back to l86 lbs, BP runs l27 over 72, have recently returned to my duties as city councilman, attending church and using my new Toshiba laptop. Just ran out of steam physically, so that will have to do for now."

NOTE OF INTEREST: If confused re last month's Newsletter containing a picture of eight gals, the following description was inadvertently not included - so if interested, refer to the June Newsletter - 2nd page - and note the following comment: GALS ANNUAL GET TOGETHER (GAGT) recently in Stuart, Florida (Left to Right) Thelma Sweeney, Laura Hancock, Wilma Evans, Mary Jo Sullivan, Barbara Hamilton, Evelyn Peters, Alice Rice and Elaine Montgomery. Several of these gals have been getting together for almost twenty years - retired from NASA/GSFC.
